From supporting breast cancer patients to funding crucial medical research, take a look at how ASDA's Tickled Pink campaign has made a difference.
After my surgery I was initially given a pink prosthesis. That was an insult. Later I received prosthesis fitting help from Breast Cancer Care. I had an hour-long private appointment with their fitter who got the right measurements and colour. I'm actually able to wear normal clothes now. Breast Cancer Care was able to help me, when I really needed help.
Your fantastic commitment over the past year has helped tens of thousands of people like Pushpa Martin (pictured) receive dedicated and personal help through Breast Cancer Care's emotional and practical support services. After her breast cancer treatment, Pushpa attended one of the charitiy's Prosthesis Fitting Sessions, which helps women who have had breast surgery choose the right prosthesis and gain their confidence back.
The money raised by our customers and colleagues has enabled Breast Cancer Care to help people like Pushpa by expanding its services across the country reaching more people than ever before.
During 2006 120 women were able to benefit, like Pushpa, from the charity's Prosthesis Fitting Service. Breast Cancer Care plans to help four times as many women this year find a suitable prosthesis that they are happy and comfortable with.
The money you raise supports the training and delivery of all Breast Cancer Care's services which are offered free to anybody who needs them. Thanks to you we can make a real meaningful difference to the lives of people affected by breast cancer. As well as expanding Breast Cancer Care's centres in Sheffield, Cardiff, Glasgow and London and the local services they offer like Prosthesis Fitting, you have enabled Breast Cancer Care to:
Since 2005, when Breast Cancer Campaign became the second charity to benefit from ASDA's Tickled Pink support, over £2.5 million has been raised for the charity.
Breast Cancer Campaign is the only charity that specialises in funding independent breast cancer research throughout the UK. It works to improve diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, gain better understanding of how it develops and ultimately either finding a cure for the disease or preventing it.
Past research has resulted in improvements in the quality of life and survival rates. 1 in 9 women in the UK will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, so the research Breast Cancer Campaign funds remains crucial.
Thanks to the efforts of ASDA's colleagues and customers, the money raised has helped the chartiy fund 23 projects around the country, as well as award a Scientific Fellowship worth £450,000.
Dr. Rob Clarke of Manchester University has been awarded a Scientific Fellowship, funded solely by ASDA, which will enable him and his team of nine scientists to discover how breast cancer develops in order to prevent it.
I am delighted to be awarded Campaign's first ever Fellowship grant. Thanks to ASDA's funding, this Fellowship will give me the opportunity to provide more insight as to why breast cancer recurs after treatment and will lead to the development of more effective ways to treat breast cancer.
